Gizmo

Introduction

'Gizmo' is a one-act play set in neutral ground that, in the writer's own words, 'is neither the world of teenagers or my world.' The play is written in a style that is both fast-moving and demanding for actors and technicians.

Ben Mason has been paralysed with fear after witnessing a fatal shooting. Help is at hand by means of a cutting-edge technological device called 'Gizmo'. Everything seems promising for Ben - until the device falls into the wrong hands!

The post-traumatic shock described in 'Gizmo' is not a recognised syndrome but something Alan Ayckbourn has made up. The idea of positive movement synchronicity is central to the play and offers performers great opportunities to develop the movement element of their work. He has written a number of plays which border on science fiction. This one also has elements of the thriller and comedy. However, the play is more than simple entertainment and engages its players and audience in the debate surrounding the use and misuse of modern technologies.

What particularly interests Alan Ayckbourn is the notion of responsibility for others. The play is about bullies, some of whom get their come-uppance, and those who try to help others though without always thinking through the possible consequences of their actions. In the end, it is Ben who has to stand up for himself in order to recover his identity and independence.

Activities devised by Joella Cooper and Emma Wilson, with Andy Kempe.
